CARVING AT THE TOP OF THE DOOR OF THE ISTANA ( PALACE ) OF HRH SULTAN MOHAMMAD JAMALUL ALAM OF SULU
In 1877 Burbidge a western naturalist and botanist visited the Istana of HRH Sultan Mohammad Jamalul Alam or Azam and sketched the carvings at the top of the door of the Sultan's palace.
He described it as two crocodiles holding a circle with an inscription in arabic letters on it.
According to one of the most important scholars:,Dr. Abdul Karim Hedjazi..." these are not crocodiles because the crocodiles do not have fish tail; they are dolphins with a beaklike snout... ."
The dolphin is a symbol for Sulu like the dragon is a symbol of the Chinese Empire
.When the son of Sultan Badaruddin I visits China brought back the idea of a royal symbol and changed the crocodiles with two dolphins holdings a circle with the inscription on it, who maybe represents the seal of the Sultan Mohammad Jamalul Alam.
